7 Glitzy Beauty Products to Ring in the New Year

12.8.2018 No Comments

As a self-described glitter-obsessed, it’s only fair I do a product roundup of my favorite glitter items of the moment. Each of these are perfect to put a pep in your step for the new year…or at least on your way to your New Year’s Eve parties 😉 . Personally, I’d rock many of these […]

Boundless beauty…

Boundless beauty (Bb) is a state of mind. It’s the belief that age is just a number, rules are meant to be broken, and you don’t need to live and look a certain way to please others – it comes when you are in tune with your truest self. As much as I want this blog to help others gain more confidence and feel beautiful, that will only come once you are comfortable in your own skin. It’s taken me years to get to this state of mind, and I’ll admit: it’s not easy to stay in this mental place, but it’s a path of self love that’s totally worth pursuing. I hope Bb can be a part of your journey.

  • I didn’t start to take a real interest in my overall well-being until college - there’s nothing quite like being on your own to realize what you are putting on your skin and in your body affects how your skin looks 🤦🏼‍♀️ Realizing the connection my own actions had to my skin was pivotal: I finally felt like I had some control over my skin 😅 Fast forward almost 10yrs later to now - I still track my skin’s reactions with any new products I try, but now I also track what’s going on in my life too. Why? Start tracking and you’ll see. Our emotional and habitual selves are far more tied to our physical selves than we like to admit, for instance:
⋆ I’m mid-month, PMS-ing, hardcore indulging in sugar...Yep, that may be a factor in those pimples along my jawline
⋆ I started to use a new moisturizer with no irritating ingredients, but I’m breaking out on my forehead...oh, and I’ve been on a caffeine kick all week + minimal sleep + stress up to my eyeballs....yep, that’s more likely the source of my t-zone breakout...
⋆I’m on the phone constantly for my job, a social smoker and can’t remember the last time I washed my pillowcase...yeah, those habits are definitely contributing to my breakouts... It takes a certain level of self-awareness to think this way, but getting to that level will make self-care so much more meaningful. Until you get there, this is my personal rule of thumb: if you’re going through some stressful shit (an intense time at work/school, personal life struggles, etc) it’s best to wait til after those temporary times pass or until you’re able to manage that stress before you think it’s a dud product.
In case you haven’t heard of #facemapping, I’ve included a few different versions here for you to see. Face mapping is essentially calling out areas of the face and mapping it back to internal organs or outside forces that could be contributing to your breakout. It was eye-opening for me to start making these connections, I’m hoping this sheds some light for you as well. (continued in the comments👇🏻)
  • #FridayFeels for me right now - drained to the point of not moving, limbs heavy, and cannot WAIT for the freakin weekend...yet I plan to do a full look later after hours? 😅⠀

  • Moody Blues 🌌✨ ...on a Monday lol #mondaymood #mondayblues #makeupmonday

Like I said in my last #beforeandafter makeup post: I use silicone-laden formulas when I need a look to pop, and when I’m just looking to look good and still treat my skin right in my day-to-day, I opt for totally different products. My skin hasn’t been loving all this silicone and with a lovely hormonal breakout to remind me that my monthly monster is soon arriving 👹 I’ll be sprinkling in those good for your skin products, but for today’s look... Products:⠀
+ BASE: @coverfx Blurring Primer, @itcosmetics Bye Bye Undereye concealer in “10 - Light Fair”, @maccosmetics Longwear Paint Pot in ‘Painterly’, @lancomeofficial #TeintIdole foundation in shade 130⠀
+ CHEEKS: @ofracosmetics blush in ‘Rose’, @hourglasscosmetics bronzer in ‘Luminous Bronze’, @jeffreestarcosmetics #SkinFrost highlight in ‘Uranus’
+ EYES: a few things mixed - @nyxcosmetics Foil Play cream eyeshadow in ‘Black Knight’, @jeffreestarcosmetics ‘Black Rainbow’ from Beauty Killer, ‘Flourishing’ + ‘Cullinan’ from #BlueBlood palette ✨topped off with Jeffree’s liquid lip in #HuntingtonBeach in my waterline + @eylureofficial lashes + LIPS: #jeffreestarcosmetics #velourliquidlipstick in ‘I’m Nude’ with ‘Skin Tight’ layered

  • It took me a loooong time to realize the power of consistency, #commitment and routines. I hit puberty at the super-not-ready-for-it age of 10 - I had no idea wtf was going on, let alone know about a beauty routine. My skin was all over the place with these newfound hormones - scalp issues came into play, spiked oil production made my face a hot mess, and I had body acne popping up in the least expected areas (anyone else experience this too?). ⠀
⠀
As I rolled into my teenage years, I had already gone through a few iterations of routines: Proactiv, Clearasil, Stridex pads, Clean&Clear...all super harsh and all made the process to finding a routine much worse. My mom saw me struggling and got me a trial size of her Clinique routine - better but still meh, (this was my first hint that showed me my skin hated fragrances products since @clinique is #fragrancefree)⠀
⠀
Over and over I tried to treat just my face, and it wasn’t until a radical shakeup in other aspects of my life did I realize: I think what I’m eating is impacting my face. I went hardcore vegan in college and my oh my it did WONDERS for my skin - and over time I realized the hormonal connection to my breakouts, stress connections to my breakouts, and of course, the impacts if I didn’t wash my face too. As I was transitioning out of being full vegan, I could see my skin reactions to all of the foods as I reintroduced fish and certain types of dairy - cow milk broke me out among *ahem* other reactions lol while salmon made my skin glowy and plump.⠀
⠀
Yes, “beautiful skin” requires a commitment, but it requires a commitment to so many other things that aren’t talked about holistically - a #skincareroutine may be all that some folks need (you lucky babes!!) but there are some folks like myself who need a stepped-up commitment involving a #skincareregimen + #cleaneating + #meditation + vitamins/supplements...know that there is no one trick pony for flawless skin, but there is a solution for everyone 😘😘😘⠀

Left: Bare face me, like hi, how are ya?⠀
Right: Full face for a night out 👩🏼‍🎤⠀
⠀
When doing makeup for a look that needs to last (I.e. an evening out, an event, etc) I’m all for silicone-laden products and long-lasting formulas. Always #talcfree and as #fragrancefree as possible, but I save the natural formulas for daytime wear. Why? B/c if something is going to sit on my skin for long hours (i.e. the workday), I need it to breathe and not encourage breakouts with my already acne prone skin 💁🏼‍♀️ but for evening/events, I’m all about preserving a look and making an impact when it matters most ✨⠀

  • Since I quit my brief stint as a cigarette smoker in college, I saw a near-immediate difference in my skin. I know this may sound oddly specific, but I was typically a 4-5 cigarette-a-day, any more and I would feel nauseous. The 3 years I smoked, I definitely noticed differences in my skin: dryness, clogged pores where the smoke would hit my face, more pronounced lines...Now, I’ll be honest: when I was a smoker, I was ages 19-21 in college...years we are not particularly kind to our bodies. ⠀
⠀
Newfound freedom from parents (at least for me) = increased alcohol consumption, late nights / little sleep, irregular eating habits, less frequently done laundry, stress from balancing school + internships + new friends + part-time jobs + navigating a new city, and the introduction of a smoking habit to round that shitty list out. I didn’t have the best balance - or any balance - and my skin showed that. ⠀
⠀
This post isn’t meant to be a PSA about smoking, but to highlight some of smoking’s effects and pull back the curtain on a myriad of other lifestyle choices that impact our skin and biome too. Our skin is a reflection of our overall health, from hydration levels, digestion issues, #stress, sleep (and lack of), hormonal imbalances, and even the surfaces it touches - ever notice you had a pimple or two pop up on the side of your face after sleeping on a dirty pillow case?⠀

PS - the part I hate the most about this original posted image...the caption, in French: “a woman, a cigarette, incorrigibly sexy.” Ew. The last time I thought cigarettes were sexy was when I was 17 and my high school bf smoked but I didn’t. Sexy isn’t the right word...mysterious? I’m not proud of my former #badhabits but I’m happy I can share them now as self reflection of how far I’ve come from those self destructive times. #selflove is soooo much more rewarding in the end. 🥰✨
  • When she started letting go, her vision became clearer. The present felt more manageable and the future began to look open and full of bright possibilities. As she shed the tense energy of the past, her power and creativity returned to her. With a revitalized excitement, she focused on building a new life where joy and freedom were abundant. ~ YP #yungpueblo

I first shared this photo + @yung_pueblo quote caption on Friday via my personal account when my mind was in a very stressed place. I gave myself time to decompress, rest, and really process what I was feeling, and today am looking at that same situation with newfound calm. My little #mondaymotivation for your week: yes, absolutely #letgo of negativity, doubt and irrational fear, but also give yourself time. Yes, I’m a firm believer that #timehealseverything, but if you’re not giving yourself the proper space to really heal and take a hard look at the source of these feelings then time may just be giving you the distance to forget the pain without actually healing.

Letting go + time for introspective reflection = #selfcaregoals. Why? B/c while you can totally sit on your couch for 20mins with a sheet mask on, that won’t help your #mentalhealth - #SelfCare is about making time for you, not just the external you but the internal, emotional you too 🥰 📷 by me (@julia_rhault) at the @TheRingling museum in FL. This is “Joseph’s coat” by #JamesTurrell- a beautiful courtyard with square cutout and a system of LED lights that are supposed to “changes the context in which you view the sky and can radically change your perception of the color of the sky and its spatial relation to you.” We didn’t stick around for sunset, but it was an epic space to be in (esp for inward reflection).
  • I’ve held off on posting this because I’m still working to get over how #selfconscious I am...*deep breath* reminder to self: this info could potentially help others... I recently posted the top photo in December 2018 on my personal account (@julia_rhault) - it may seem flashy and confident, but woah mama that’s the least makeup I’ve worn in a selfie photo...ever. I was so damn happy I couldn’t not share it. ⠀
⠀
Flashback to 2016 (two bottom pics) - ⠀
Left: with #sensitiveskin you don’t always know the reactions your skin will have - this was one morning during my #clearskinjourney that I woke up to big red splotches on my face. I had no idea what caused them or how to get rid of them...and at the time I was working at a #skincare brand so it was less than ideal to say the least lol⠀
⠀
Right: Also during my #acnejourney I would trial and error new products, working to get more and more towards #cleanbeauty and natural formulations vs derm prescribed Rx and harsh formulas which were making it worse. This particular photo was during the time when I was using a highly fragranced line of skincare...and this is how my skin reacts to fragrance: tears of pimples 😢. Top off that moment in time with a super stressful office environment, stress from planning my wedding, stressed out eating habits, and you have yourself a recipe for #angryskin.⠀

  • Babes, this is the whole reason I’ve started Boundless - sharing my #clearskinjourney, path to #selfacceptance, and have a little makeup fun along the way in hopes it will inspire or help you too. Sharing with friends and coworkers IRL has helped transform their skin and build up their confidence, I hope it can help some of you too! Everyone’s journey is unique to them, but I’m hoping that in sharing how I got here will shed light for you and others 🥰⠀
.⠀
It’s taken me years to get here, and I was 100% ashamed of my story. Why? Because when you have sensitive skin but don’t know the triggers setting you off, you’re desperate for answers. Top it off with puberty from a young age, a harsh inner self-critic, a type A personality, minor social anxiety, and unknown food sensitivities and💥bam💥 I’ve been seeing a dermatologist since I was 10 y/o. Issues ranging from premature acne, cysts, scalp irritation, and reactions to some of the most popular treatments (ahem, Proactiv and Accutane)...it’s been a fun journey (lol). Top it off with hormones, #adulting stressors, pollution (I live in #nyc after all)...it’s been a bumpy ride, but I want to share in hopes it will give ideas and tips to some and comfort others because everything is a #workinprogress and you’re not alone in this 🤗⠀
